The Romans used Tarraconensis as a base for their conquest of the Iberian peninsula in the 3rd century BC, The amphitheatre is well preserved despite the caatholic church that was later built in the middle of it. There are a lot of Roman remains in Tarragona as it was evidently a major Roman outpost in its time. Today it is a major industrial port.
